CHAPTER 10

“In three, two,” one, Jason mouthed pointing to the trio seated at the desk.

Hannah smiled and looked down the barrel of camera one, as the intro music for Hockey Hour filled the studio. Just relax, Mandi had said while making Hannah up in the chair earlier. Yeah, right. Easier said than done.

“Welcome to Hockey Hour. I’m Drew Anderson,” said Drew.

“And I’m Bob Patresky,” said his sidekick.

As Drew’s previously recorded voice-over talked up some of the featured highlights on the accompanying reel being shown to viewers, the wrestling in her stomach suddenly eased. Cassie’s earlier reminder that she was praying for her made her wonder if she just had, for she suddenly felt a new sense of confidence and peace. Jason pointed at her, and she nodded, her chin lifting a fraction. That’s right. She could do this. She would do this.

“We’re here tonight with CNSTV’s very own Hannah Wade, our newest special correspondent who is joining us at the desk tonight. Welcome, Hannah.”

“Thanks for having me, Drew. It’s great to be here.” She dimmed her smile back.

At the production meetings this week, Jason had made it clear it was imperative that Hannah be seen to be welcomed by Drew and Bob in order to rectify the bad impressions made on the program last week. And while she was tasked with looking happy with being here while delivering reports, she wasn’t going to look like a grinning fool.

“So, some of you may be wondering why we have another panelist joining us. For those of you who don’t know, Hannah Wade is a sports journalist whose passion for sports, and hockey in particular, led her to the women’s professional hockey league and gold at the World Championships, until an untimely accident forced her to focus on her second love: sportscasting.”

Bob murmured, “Gold, huh?”

Hannah nodded. “That’s right. It was a fantastic experience,” she said, just like her autocue said. Not “and how many hockey gold medals do you have, Bob?” like snarky-her might want to.

Drew continued. “Now it was clear that some of what Bob and I did last week was not in the best of taste, so I’m pleased that Hannah was willing to overlook that and deign to join us tonight.”

And every Friday night Jason wanted her to. And what was with the “deign,” like she was some sort of princess? She willed her expression to remain pleasant, and not look offended.

“Yes, we’re sorry if our actions offended you or anyone else, Hannah.”

If? That didn’t sound like someone taking responsibility. Neither was it what was written on the autocue. If Bob was willing to go off script then so was she.

“I appreciate that, Bob.” Even though it probably sounded as fake an apology to the viewers as it did to her. “But I’m a big girl. And clearly I do not need people making fun of me when I am well able to make a fool of myself all on my own.” She smiled at them both then gazed at the camera.
